Focus and Scope

International Journal of Population Studies (IJPS) is an open access, multidisciplinary journal that publishes high quality original research and timely reviews of recent advances and emerging issues in population processes; dynamics of fertility, mortality, and migration; and linkages with socioeconomic and environmental change across times, spaces, and cultures.

The journal aims to provide a platform for researchers worldwide to promote and share cutting-edge knowledge and advances in different areas of population research. Article formats include original research, commentaries, meta-analyses, perspectives, short technical research notes, review articles, and book reviews that address demography and population-related issues. The journal also offers special issues arising from conferences and other meetings.

Editorials

They refer to a concise commentary highlighting prominent topics in the Journal issue. These are the official opinions of the editors of the journal or the special issue This manuscript type typically has 3,500 words at most.

Research Articles

Research Articles refer to exclusively unpublished peer-reviewed research papers in demography and related fields. Papers may cover a wide range of topics on demography, as well as on population with a focus on empirical research, theory, and methods. Research papers are evaluated according to the quality, relevance and topicality of the key research question and results in relation to the current state of research. The assessment of relevance and topicality does not exclusively focus on the specific discipline but also considers the contribution to an interdisciplinary debate between population studies and its adjacent fields of research. Critical overviews of the state of research are explicitly appreciated, Review of relevant research approaches and available results as well as references to the respective research literature, commensurability of the underlying research concepts and the empirical methods and sources/statistics. All articles in this category should represent new findings or discoveries in a subject area that were not published before. Quantitative and qualitative approaches are equally appreciated. This manuscript type typically has 5 tables and figures in total and up to 60 references and 6,000 words for the body text.

Reviews articles

Review articles are summarized descriptions of recent findings and significant developments at the particular subject area of research considering the Journal’s scope. They should include critical assessments of novel technologies, evaluation of subject advancement, elucidate unresolved questions, comparative analysis with a substantial coverage of previous works and highlight future prospects. This manuscript type typically has 5 tables and figures in total and up to 80 references and 8,000 words (exclusive of reference list and abstract).

Letters to editors

This type of articles mainly includes comments from a reader(s) about individual articles. These letters must be constructive and contribute to the development of individual articles published or the entire journal. Letters containing new ideas, supporting data, or data criticizing the article may be subjected to peer-review (determined on a case-by-case basis by the journal’s editorial team) and published in the online publication but not in the printed version. This manuscript type typically has 2,000 words (exclusive of reference list). The authors of the original paper sometimes may be invited to respond to these with a letter of their own.

Technical notes

Technical notes are shorter than research articles and may be used to describe a new methodology or to present results from new techniques or equipment. A technical note should be under 4,000 words with no more than 5 figures and tables.

Commentaries

Commentaries present an in-depth analysis of current issues. Commentaries should not exceed 3500 words total (including abstract, main text, references and figure legends). They should have a short pithy title, an abstract of 50 words or less, no more than 35 references, and one or two figures (with figure legends) or tables.

Peer Review Process

All manuscripts submitted to International Journal of Population Studies will follow the following procedure:

  • Initial submission are reviewed by in-house editors to ensure adherence to journal policies and for double-blind review
  • Editor-in-chief decides on the manuscript to be sent out for the review process and assigns the manuscript to one of the editors according to the particular topic.
  • Editor assigns reviewers from inside the editorial board or outside depending on the topic.
  • After evaluations by the reviewers have been received, the editor-in-chief makes one of the following recommendations: accept, minor revision, major revision, reject and resubmit, and reject.
  • If the decision is a minor revision, the authors have 7 days to resubmit the revised manuscript.
  • If the decision is a major revision, the authors have 14 days to resubmit the revised manuscript.
  • Upon resubmission, the same procedure is applied as for the initial submission.
  • Authors may appeal for a rejected submission. Appeal requests must be made in writing to ijps@whioce.com with detailed reasons for the appeal and point by point responses to the reviewer's remarks. Decisions on appeals are final without exception.
  • For all manuscripts accepted for publication, the peer review process will be deemed to be completed. The manuscript will proceed to be copyedited, layout edited and proofread before being published online.

Note: You may suggest up to four academically qualified reviewers for consideration. Please insert the current contact details of the reviewer and state the reason(s) for the recommendation under the "Comments for the Editor" section. However, please take note that the Editorial team strives to ensure the peer review process is fair and unbiased and hence, there is no guarantee that a recommended reviewer will be approached to perform the peer review.

Open Access Policy

This journal provides immediate open access to its content on the principle that making research freely available to the public supports a greater global exchange of knowledge.

 

Authorship

Authorship should be limited to people who have contributed substantially to the work. Authors must indicate their specific contributions to the published work. This information should be listed in the manuscript under the section ‘Author Contribution’. Examples of contributions include: designed research, performed research, contributed new reagents or analytic tools, analysed data, and manuscript preparation.

The corresponding author author must be clearly stated in all submitted manuscripts. The corresponding author(s) is responsible for:

  • Obtaining permission from all the authors listed in the manuscript.
  • Strictly adhere to all editorial submission policies and responsible for any communication and feedback following the publications.
  • Obtaining written permission or authorization from the authors of the work concerned for any mention of any unpublished material included in the manuscript, e.g. data from manuscripts-in-press, personal communication, or work in preparation. 

 

Conflict of Interest

The authors have to provide the authorization of no conflict with any financial body or funding agency that might influence the results or interpretation of their manuscript. All authors, members, reviewers and editors must disclose any association that poses a conflict of interest in connection with the manuscript. The corresponding author will be asked to sign a form behalf of all of the authors regarding potential conflicts of interest at the time of acceptance.

The editorial team does not approve of any plagiarism attempts. iThenticate will be utilised at the editor’s discretion to verify the originality of submitted manuscripts. If plagiarism is detected during the review process the manuscript may be rejected pending the severity of plagiarism. Therefore, if a manuscript uses a text copied directly from another source, this text must be written in quotation marks and the original source must be cited.

 

Indexing and Archiving

International Journal of Population Studies (IJPS) aims to be indexed by world-recognized databases, for example, PubMed and Scopus. IJPS has been indexed by several world class abstracting/indexing databases:

Editorial Policies

A manuscript will not be accepted if it has been published or is currently under consideration for publication in any other journals. The author will need to notify the editorial team if the data in their submission has been presented in conferences.

After acceptance, the publisher have the rights to edit the work for the original edition and for any revision.

 

Publishing Policies
