Call for papers on a Special Issue

As the world enters the 21st century, with socioeconomic transformation and the formation of new cultural norms, families and generational relations are undergoing profound changes and taking on new forms and shapes. For example, with the rising longevity, four or more generations living at the same time, though not necessarily living in the same household, has increasingly become commonplace. It is worth exploring the impacts of such a new demographic reality on personal relations and individual member’s well-being. Furthermore, the global divide in population prospects between the developed and developing countries points to different challenges faced by societies. While population aging and below replacement fertility have to be dealt with in rich countries, with urbanization gaining momentum, massive rural-urban migration has been witnessed in many developing countries. These socio-demographic changes may put various strains on families and it is important to understand how families are capable or incapable of responding to these challenges. Each society has its unique experience and dynamics. We herein would like to invite researchers from the international community of family studies to contribute to this special issue, to shed light on new trends in family or intergenerational relations, and their social, economic, and cultural impacts.
